Interior decoration or decor is the art of decorating a room so that it is attractive, easy to use, and functions well with existing architecture. The goal of interior decoration is to provide a certain “feel” for the room; it encompasses applying wallpaper, faux finishes, painting walls and other surfaces, choosing furniture and fittings, such as lighting fixtures, floor plans and providing other decorations for the area such as artwork and carpets.
Although the terms interior decorating and interior design are sometimes used interchangeably, each discipline exhibits a distinct difference in its scope. Interior decorating is generally focused on the selection and presentation of interior items within a space, such as furniture, accessories, finishes and room layout. interior design, on the other hand, involves manipulating the architectural integrity of the interior space.
What is the difference between Interior Design and Interior Decoration?
Both concepts overlap. A designer gets involved with space planning and the technical aspects, such as plumbing, electrical, etc. A designer often works with the architect, and when a designers work with builders, exciting things happen. A decorator, on the other hand, gets involved with color, patterns and fabrics.
I want to redecorate my living room. What should I select first, the rug, the window treatments or the furniture?
All selections should be made at the start so coordination is assured. But not all purchases have to be made at one time. Once your master plan is set and all colors, styles and patterns are selected the purchasing can be done as your budget will permit. Stick with the master plan and your goal will be achieved.
How can you give both your children privacy when they share the same bedroom in a small apartment?
Each child should have his or her own desk and dresser or chest for storage. Don’t put up barriers because they make the space appear even smaller.
How long will it take to redecorate my room?
Planning time could take as long as four weeks. After orders are placed, depending on the production time of furniture and back order time of imports and fabrics, delivery can take from four to twelve weeks or more. A decorator or designer should be able to inform you of any delays. At that time you may choose to reselect.
What kind of accessory would you suggest as a gift for a couple who seem to have everything?
I wouldn’t give any accessory as a gift without asking the advice of the decorator who worked on the room in which the accessory is to go. The decorator should be happy to advise you and supply you with the product. Or, ask your friends what they would like. You may be able to purchase an item to add to a collection.
Is it acceptable to angle (place at an angle) a large piece of furniture?
Angling can cut the corners of a large, long, narrow room. A sofa or piano can become focal point when it is angled. This can give the space a cozy feeling.
